A Comprehensive Perspective for New and Seasoned Fire Investigators - MA IAAI Training

Updated: Apr 14, 2022

Continued education and training keeps our experts current in changes to the fire science, fire investigation and forensic engineering fields.

Our experts recently participated in the Massachusetts Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators training seminar on Cape Cod. The three-day course was taught by prior IAAI President and prior NJ IAAI President, Barry Grimm and retired ATF Agent and current NY IAAI President, Dixon Robin.

NFPA Standards and Fire Science Principles

The training included updates on the #NFPA921: Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations, #NFPA1033: Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator, and theforthcoming #NFPA1321: Standard for the Organization and Operation of Fire Investigation Units. NFPA 1321 is currently in its initial draft phases and will dictate the requirements for all public fire investifation units, private fire investigation companies, and potentially even sole-proprietors in the private sector.

The main portion of the training program was on fire science principles involving fire chemistry, heat transfer and fire effects, which included a full day of live burns on three separate burn cells to physically demonstrate and reinforce the growth and development of compartment fires, dependent upon fuel loads and ventilation paths.

CFI and CFEI Certification Credits

This seminar added 20 Continuing Education Credits (CEU's) to maintain our experts' Certified Fire Investigator (IAAI-#CFI) and Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (NAFI-CFEI) certifications. The seminar was also a great networking event for our experts in the private sector to continue great working relationships with public investigators from the Massachusetts State Police Fire Investigation Unit, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms (#ATF), and the numerous fire investigators, firefighters, and police officers from the various municipalities that attended this training program.
